Phishing and Spoofing
Beware of emails that require you to "verify" certain personal information such as your Debit or ATM card number and PIN, your Internet Banking User ID and Password, your eBay or PayPal information, Social Security Number, date of birth, mother's maiden name or any other information that may be used to steal your identity. These emails usually contain an urgent or threatening tone and are designed to encourage you to quickly go to the thief's web site and provide this information. If you do not initiate the communication, you should not provide any information.
Many of these same scams may be done by phone call with the thief posing as a bank employee, police officer, the IRS or some other person. If you do not initiate the communication, you should not provide any information. If you believe the contact may be legitimate, contact Jefferson Bank and Trust Company or other organization using the phone number on your bank statement or in a phone book.
